J&J's Weekend Getaway

Life has seemed really busy lately and it seems to be flying by! We decided that we needed to pull the hand break! Stop and feel the sea breeze on our faces and the sun on our skin, which meant it was time to head to Brighton!

We were in need of some 'JUST US' time. If you have been reading this blog for a while you will know that Jake works as a Paramedic. You may have seen recently that Jake was one of the first on the scene at the London Bridge terrorist attacks.

Not quite the phone call you want to get in the middle of the night and my heart sank when he hung up! But honestly if there was anyone you would want to by your side in an event like that it's my Hubby! He is such a quick thinker and would go above and beyond to help anyone in need. I'm so incredibly proud of him and so glad he was there to help everyone he could. However, a little bit of me wanted him by my side that night just to make sure he was safe and sound. As you can imagine I spent the rest of that night white knuckled, cell phone in hand and waiting for his next call.

I threw my arms around him and hugged him just that little bit tighter when he got home in the morning and it was incredibly hard to watch him walk out the door again the next night. As you can imagine Jake was both physically and mentally drained after going through something so incredibly traumatising and we desperately needed some down time. So, it was time for a little weekend getaway to Brighton, it's one of our favorite places to escape to it's and so easy to get there.

When we arrived we headed straight to 'The Lanes'! These cute little alleyways are near the seafront and filled with brightly painted houses, cute antique shops and cafes.

We stopped off at The Flour Pot with it's freshly baked bread and pastries filling their windows. We picked up a couple of hot drinks and continued to wonder.

We headed down to the waterfront and walked along the promenade. It was so lovely just walking along hand in hand, stopping every so often to take photos and admire the view. Jake loves to take photos and he has quite the knack for it don't you think? He definitely prefers to be behind the lens than in front of it so he takes most of the pictures for my blog, hence the name Jessie & Jake.

After our long walk we were feeling quite puckish and headed to English's of Brighton, a restaurant and oyster bar based in a trio of former fishermen's cottages. Wonderfully located in a nice corner of The Lanes we chose a lovely table outside so we could enjoy live music from the buskers playing close by.

As soon as I saw Mussels on the menu I knew what I was getting for my starter! Jake went for salt & chilli pepper squid with a lime & tomberry salsa, we were both in seafood heaven!

Next up was a courgette spaghetti carbonara with smoked salmon, lemon & chive pangrattato and Jake went for the classic 6oz Sussex reared rump steak. Both were absolute perfection.

Because no lunch menu would be complete without it we couldn't leave without dessert, I ordered Strawberries, basil, Chantilly cream and almonds. Simple and yet so scrumptious! Honestly you can never go wrong with strawberries and cream! Jake, with his chocolate tooth had a pistachio profiterole with chocolate salami and sponge.

We had a long and leisurely lunch spending a few hours chatting, drinking wine and solving the world's problems and before we knew it, our train was due to depart and it was time to go home! We didn't even make it to the Pier, I absolutely love to play those classic penny games! I guess we're left with no choice, we'll just have to do another trip soon....
